Apartment Fire in Glendale

On February 9th, 2022 at approximately 1:00 am the Calgary Fire Department responded to alarms in the 3800 block of 19th avenue in the southwest community of Glendale.  On arrival crews found an 8 story apartment building with occupants leaving the structure.  Exiting occupants informed crews of possible smoke on the 5th floor of the 108 suite building.

Crews on scene ascended stairs to the 5th floor where they found smoke and began evacuating residents.  Some residents were non-ambulatory and required assistance from firefighters to leave the building.  Once inside, fire crews found the suite of origin and faced a fire in the kitchen area spreading to other parts of the suite.  One occupant, a 38 year old female was rescued by firefighters and transferred to EMS for care.  The occupant was suffering from smoke inhalation and required transport to hospital.  The fire was contained by crews to the unit of origin and damage from the fire was extensive in the kitchen area.  Smoke from the fire spread to the hallways and adjacent suites causing minor damage.  As a precaution, firefighters evacuated 3 floors until air quality was restored with the assistance of Calgary Police.

Firefighters will remain on scene through the night extinguishing hot spots and working with investigators to determine the cause of the fire.  All systems in the building have been restored and residents have returned to their units.
