Afternoon Kitchen Fire Displaces Residents

Shortly after 12:00 this afternoon the Calgary Fire Department was called to the 6000 block of Memorial Drive NE for reports of a house fire.  Upon arrival, fire crews were met by a resident of the home who stated that the kitchen was on fire.  Firefighters entered the home and quickly doused the fire, containing it to the kitchen.  The two residents of the home self evacuated after they were alerted by a smoke alarm.  One of the residents, a man in his 30s, was treated by EMS for smoke inhalation then transported to the hospital. Unfortunately, a number of pet parrots were overcome by smoke and did not survive the fire. Fire Investigators are currently on scene. Traffic in the area is unaffected at this time
