Update: Inglewood condominium fire

A four alarm fire in the early morning hours has left six condominium units damaged by fire and many more with smoke and water damage. 128 units in two buildings on 17 Street S.E. were evacuated when fire broke out on a balcony on the fourth floor of one of the buildings. As a result, over 200 residents continue to be displaced.

Fire crews quickly got the fire under control after calling for additional resources. No injuries were reported and evacuees were taken to the Max Bell arena for shelter. The Calgary Emergency Management Agency and Red Cross continue to be available up to approximately 9:00 this evening at the Max Bell reception centre to provide information and support.

All evacuees are asked to check in at Max Bell if they need any important personal items from their suite or would like to get their vehicle out of the parkade. Regular shuttles are being provided to the Inglewood location by Calgary Transit from the reception centre so that residents may appropriately and securely be escorted one at a time where safe to do so.

Fire crews remain on scene to continue fire watch and escort residents with retrieval of important items and to assist with the removal of vehicles.

It is currently unknown when some residents may be allowed to reoccupy their suites. Utilities as well as fire and life safety systems need to be fully functioning before allowing people back in. Residents of the fire damaged suites will be out for some time until reconstruction is complete.

If any citizens have any photos or video of the fire especially prior to CFD arrival on scene, please email Carol Henke at piofire@calgary.ca
