Update: Bankview building fire

Shortly before 4:30 on Friday afternoon, Calgary fire crews responded to a building fire which significantly damaged a five story 56 unit residential building. Firefighters battled throughout the night and the fire was called under control early Saturday morning.

At the present time, fire crews continue fire watch and the search for hot spots as well as monitoring air quality. City of Calgary Safety Codes Officers from the Safety Response Unit have assessed the building's structural integrity.  Residents from the townhouse buildings are encouraged to contact the property manager to schedule escorted entry to retrieve important personal items. It is unknown at this time when the townhouse buildings can be reoccupied and if escorts will be conducted into the fire damaged building.

No injuries to civilians or firefighters were reported as a result of this three alarm fire. Throughout the incident, one dog and six cats were rescued from the building and taken to a nearby vet clinic. All except one cat  taken to the clinic have been returned to their owners.

Calgary fire crews expect to remain on scene throughout the day and into the evening.

Fire investigators continue to investigate the origin and cause of this fire. The Calgary Fire Department thanks all citizens who have emailed photos, video and information to piofire@calgary.ca
