Update - State of Local Emergency

 

The City of Calgary remains in a state of local emergency due to significant flooding.
 
Call 311 for flood-related calls only. Call 911 in case of emergency.
 
CP Rail/Bonnybrook rail incident
The evacuation zone around the Bonnybrook bridge train derailment has been reduced and more roads are being re-opened.
 
Getting around
Here are the latest updates:
 
Roads:
  • Deerfoot Trail is now open in both directions.
  • Barlow Trail is now open in both directions.
  • Ogden Road remains closed over the river between 50 Avenue SE and 17 Street SE. 50 Ave SE is open.
  • A single lane is now open on Shouldice Bridge.
  • MacDonald Bridge is now open.
  • Memorial drive is now open to two way traffic on from Crowchild Trail to 10th Street.
 
LRT:
  • NW LRT Extension Pedestrian Bridge will be closed westbound Crowchild from Twelve Mile Coulee to Stoney Trail from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. on June 27.
 
Sinkholes and concrete blowouts:
  • There are currently 54 sinkhole locations that need to be repaired. Six repairs were completed yesterday.
  • Eight concrete blowouts have been identified, with two of the repairs being completed.
Calgary Bridges
As the City continues to respond to the CP Rail/Bonnybrook Rail incident, The City wants to assure you that all City of Calgary bridges are safe. City bridges are built into bedrock and continually undergo safety evaluations. All City of Calgary bridges were inspected three times before they were re-opened.
Water Quality and Conservation
The Bonnybrook Waste Water Treatment Plant is no longer part of the CP Rail/Bonnybrook rail incident evacuation zone. City staff are working to bring the plant back online. We want to remind citizens that drinking water in Calgary remains safe; however we must all continue to conserve water.
 
The City will begin watering golf courses and other City property. The water that will be used to do comes from the storm water system and is not drinking water. Because we are using storm water The City is able to protect valuable assets.
 
Downtown Core
The area in the downtown core from 17th Avenue to 20th Avenue and east of 7th Street to Stampede Park was energized last evening. City crews are now working to assess and inspect properties south of 20th Avenue to the Elbow River and east to 6th Avenue SE. There are currently four areas of the downtown core still under evacuation orders: Downtown/East Village, Chinatown, Victoria Park and the Beltline.

Clean-up
Community Support Centres continue to be open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. If you require residential pumping, power, gas or other essential services please go to your Community Support Centre.
 
If you’re a small business and can’t make your own arrangements, come to a Community Support Centre or use the online 311 service request to get on the list for water pumping and other essential services.  We are happy to chare that to date 95% of residents who have requested help with pumping water have received it.
 
A small number of residences have individual sanitary sewer issues. If you do, please call 311.
 
The City is establishing locations for large waste bins to assist with clean up in the downtown core. The first location is now available to drop off waste:
  • The Cecil Hotel parking lot at 3rd Street between 5th and 4th Avenues, SE.
The Calgary School Board and the Calgary Catholic School District are opening parking lots of selected schools to help with the flood clean up. A list of available lots is available on Calgary.ca. The City is also requesting commercial garbage collection pick-up be done more frequently in the downtown core to aid in the clean-up process.
 
Power
ENMAX and The City of Calgary Development & Building Approvals has been working 24 hours a day to return power to Calgary. They are currently in the process of bringing power up in a large area downtown. Once this area is back online the only the East Village and a small area of east downtown extending roughly to 1 St S.W.  at the rail tracks and 1 St S.E. at the river would be without power.
 
Power to 10,000 citizens was restored overnight to several areas including the Beltline, Elbow Park, Erlton and Sunnyside.
 
Steps to restore power
If you have lost power in your home and continue to have no power service, please note that there are steps to be taken before your power is restored.
 
You should check your home for any appliances that may have been left on when you were evacuated or the power was shut off. These applications should be turned off or unplugged before the power is restored. This might include lights, cooking appliances, electronic equipment and others.
 
By not turning these appliances off prior to power restoration, there is a risk of starting a fire.  There is no need to unplug major appliances such as stoves. However, ensure that all heating elements on any appliance are turned off before power being restored.
        
 If power has been restored to your neighbours, but you are still without power, you can:
  1. Fill out a “new request” form on the City of Calgary 311 mobile app, spot311.calgary.ca
  2. Visit your community reception centre
  3. Visit calgary.ca to fill out the online service request
  4. Call 311
 
Transit
The Centre Street LRT platform eastbound re-opened today, June 27, at 10:00 am. Remediation and clean-up continues at all affected LRT stations. For up-to-date information on Calgary transit service, please visit calgarytransit.com.
