Calgary Fire Department fights two alarm fire in city's north east

At approximately 1:00 in the morning on July28th, the Calgary Fire Department responded to reports of a building fire on 28th  Street and 5th Ave NE. The first arriving fire crew discovered two separate buildings as well as numerous cars on fire. Due to the large fire load, the response was immediately upgraded to a second alarm. A second alarm doubles the number of responding apparatus.

Fire crews used an elevated platform and large volumes of water to successfully contain the fire to the business and property of origin, an automotive recycling business. The responding firefighters had to deal with fires in two separate buildings as well as numerous small explosions of gas tanks in the vehicles on the property .Due to heavy fire volume at the time of arrival of fire crews, searches of the buildings will be done when it is deemed safe to do so.

There was no damage to the adjacent businesses. One firefighter sustained an injury to his hand however no other injuries were reported. Fire crews remain on scene dealing with hot spots. The investigation by Calgary Fire investigators and Calgary Police arson unit had begun to determine the origin and cause of this fire. This fire is considered suspicious and the lease holder is cooperating with investigators.
