Two Alarm Fire Destroys a SouthWest Home

The Calgary Fire Department responded to a house fire on the 100 block of Evergreen Way SW. just before 11:00 pm Saturday night. Large volumes of smoke in the air prompted the responding firefighters to call a second alarm prior to their arrival. Once on scene they were confronted by a large two story single family home with a walkout basement fully engulfed in fire. Defensive fire fighting tactics were initiated to keep the fire from spreading to surrounding homes while also attacking the main body of the fire. The surrounding homes were evacuated as a precaution during the fire attack. An Aerial ladder was set up in the street behind the house and flowed a master stream of water over top of the houses backing onto the property to aid in controlling the fire, High volume fans were used to pressurize the houses on either side of the property to keep heat and gases from entering and causing additional exposure fires. This tactic along with well place hose lines and the hard work of the firefighters limited the damage to the adjacent homes to minor exterior heat damage. A family of three are known to live at the address. Two of the three are known to be out of the country at this time and the third has not yet been located. Police and fire investigators are working to find this person. The cause has not yet been determined. Firefighters will remain on scene overnight watching for and preventing any flare ups.
