The Calgary Fire Departments Extinguishes Airport Portable Power Unit Fire

At approximately 4:00 this morning the Calgary Fire Department responded to the Calgary International Airport for reports of an Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) fire.  Upon arrival, outside of the terminal, fire crews found an external APU on fire.  Airport staff utilized a small towing unit called a “Tug” to move the burning APU away from the airplane it was powering.  Fire crews then used a foam/water mixture to extinguish the fire.

The APU is a small portable diesel generator, mounted on a trailer, which is used to provide electrical power to a stationary aircraft.  It is stored outside of an aircraft on the tarmac.  

There were no injuries to personnel or damage to any aircraft associated with the fire. At this time the cause of the fire is under investigation.
