The Calgary Fire Department Responds to Strip Mall Fire in the South West

Last night at approximately 8:00 Pm the Calgary Fire Department was called to the 3700 block of 51 St SW for reports of a building fire.  Arriving fire crews found a large 2 story commercial strip mall with thick brown smoke and flames venting from columns at the front of the structure.  The flames were quickly spreading to an architectural awning which was attached to the front of the building.  Due to the building smoke and structure size, additional firefighters were immediately ordered.  Utilizing ground ladders and aerial apparatus, fire crews breached the awning and exposed the fire filled compartment, extinguishing the fire as they worked. The awning, which stretched the entire length of the building (approximately 75 meters) was fully exposed as crews cut access holes, every 2 meters, to ensure the fire was completely extinguished. Fortunately, the fire was contained to the exterior of the building.  During the peak of the incident as many as 14 fire apparatus were on scene.  No injuries were reported to CFD personnel. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.  At this time, traffic routes in the area are unaffected.
