The Calgary Fire Department Cappy Smart Band celebrates 20 years of musical pursuits
The Calgary Fire Department on behalf of the Cappy Smart Band, would like to invite music lovers to enjoy a free public concert this Sunday, November 10th.
In honour the Band's 20th Anniversary in 2013/2014, three free concerts will be hosted by the 40-piece concert band.
“We have been fortunate to honour the legacy of James “Cappy” Smart through our music over the past two decades,” said Karen Mackie, President of the Cappy Smart Society. “It is through this important connection to our past that we have been able to continue to delight audiences.”
The original Cappy Smart band was formed by the first fulltime paid Fire Chief of Calgary, James “Cappy” Smart. The band was a staple in entertaining a vibrant young city. The band ceased to function in early 1914 when all of the musicians in the band volunteered for the War effort. In 1993, it was revived thanks in large part to the support and encouragement of local businessman Mr. David Mitchell, whose father was a close personal friend of Fire Chief Smart.
This weekend’s concert will run from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Leacock Theatre at Mount Royal University (4825 Mt Royal Gate SW).
Additional concerts are planned for March and June 2014. Admission is free however, donations in support of the band will be accepted.
The Cappy Smart Society is a volunteer-based organization made up of amateur and professional musicians from the community. They play throughout the year at a wide variety of venues in support of the Calgary Fire Department and numerous charities and non-profit organizations.
