The Calgary Fire Department Battles Townhouse Fire

At approximately 6:00 PM today the Calgary Fire Department responded to the 10000 block of 19 Street S.W. for reports of a townhouse fire.  Upon arrival, fire crews found thick, black smoke venting from a window in the end unit of a four unit townhouse complex.  The fire officer in charge immediately called for extra fire apparatus to assist with potential life and property concerns.  Fire crews first attacked the fire from the exterior of the structure quickly bringing it under control.  Firefighters then entered the residence to conduct a search for occupants and extinguish any hidden fires. Firefighters confirmed no one was in the home at the time of the fire, but did rescue an unconscious pet cat from the townhouse.  Fire crews managed to revive the cat, using an oxygen mask, then handed the pet off to a grateful owner.  The tenants of the townhouse, a family of four, arrived at home just as fire crews began to fight the fire. There were no injuries reported and the fire was confined to the main floor of the involved unit. The remaining three units were undamaged.  Fire investigators are currently on scene.  An estimate of damage is not available at this time.
