SMOKE FORCES EVACUATION OF APPARTMENT BUILDING

 

At approximately 4:15 this afternoon the Calgary Fire Department responded to the 1300 block of 17 Ave SW for reports of a building fire.  Upon arrival, fire crews found a 3 story apartment with a group of tenants and staff waiting outside.  A Building Manager approached the arriving firefighters and informed them that there was a fire in a basement unit and that all tenants had been evacuated. Fire crews entered the building and found a small fire on the stove of one of the basement apartment.  Fire crews extinguished the fire and cleared smoke form the structure.  The lone tenant of the involved suite, a male in his 40’s, was treated by EMS for minor burns and smoke inhalation. The building has since been cleared of smoke and the tenants have been allowed back into their suites.  Currently, there is no estimate of damage available and Fire Investigators are on scene.
