SECOND KITCHEN FIRE OF THE DAY CAUSES ANOTHER APARTMENT COMPLEX TO BE EVACUATED

At approx. 0830 this evening, the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) responded to reports of an apartment fire on 50 St NW. When the crews arrived, they were met by the occupants of a three story walk up apartment building. The involved second floor residence was quickly identified and Fire fighters gained entry to the apartment through the balcony by utilizing an 8 meter ground ladder.  Due to the large volume of smoke, the 50 or so, occupants of the building were evacuated and housed in an adjacent complex. The fire was extinguished and by employing high volume fans, the smoke and fumes were removed from the building. Aside from the involved apartment all other residences are habitable and the occupants have returned to their homes. There were no injuries. Earlier this afternoon, the CFD responded to an almost identical fire on 17 Ave SW, unfortunately, at that fire the occupant sustained non- life threatening injuries and required treatment from EMS. Although the locations of both fires have been identified, the cause is still under investigation.
