Home in Hawkwood Evacuated durring Gas Leak

Firefighters were called out this evening just before 7:00 pm for a natural gas leak. The leak occurred at the rear of a home on the 0 -100 block of Hawkwood Way NW. The home owner with help from a friend was in the process of replacing poles in a retaining wall. While digging a natural gas line was severed. Fire crews have evacuated one home of 4 people as a precaution. Gas has not been detected in that or any other home in the area. Atco gas is on scene to repair the leak. People are reminded to make sure that utilities are located and marked prior to digging. In this case that had been done but a gas line was still cut. When working close to the marked lines extreme caution must be used to avoid a similar problem. Dig at a shallow angle and brush away loose dirt to expose any potential danger. This will help minimize the risk of a similar problem.
