Firefighters and Police involved in River Search

The Fire Department aquatics rescue team along with the Police Hawks Helicopter were called out this evening for a report of two people jumping off the Shouldice bridge into the Bow river. The call was received just after 10:00 pm and involved 3 rescue boats supported by Hawks. An adult male made it to shore on his own but reports from witnesses said that a female was swept down stream in the current. Due to darkness rescuers used high power spot lights to search. Durring the search it seems that the missing female made it to shore and was uninjured durring the ordeal. The couple may have been trying to avoid talking to the rescuers for fear of being in trouble. Alcohol may have also played a role in the event. River conditions and low light made the search very dangerous for the rescuers. Many hazards created by the June flood are still present in the river and difficult to see at night. When using the river for any form of recreation proper equipment, caution and good judgement must be used. The river also remains cold and hypothermia can set in rapidly.
