Fire Displaces Family From Apartment

At approximately 3:40 this afternoon, the Calgary Fire Department responded to a fire on Radcliff Crescent South East. Upon arrival, fire crews found smoke in the main floor hallway originating from a suite on that level. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and ventilated the suite. Damage to the kitchen is extensive and there is moderate smoke damage to the rest of that unit. There were no occupants in the suite at the time of the fire and there were no reports of injuries.  The family, with two children, age 10 and 14  will be staying with friends until they can return home.

The Calgary Fire Department  wishes to remind Calgarians to "watch what they heat". The leading cause of kitchen fires is cooking left unattended. Always have an oven mitt and a matching lid nearby. The quickest way to contain and extinguish a fire in a pot on the stove is to put on your oven mitt and carefully put the lid on it. Turn the element off and do not move the pot. Leave the lid on the pot until it is cool.
