Fire Crews Respond To Pepper Spray Incident

Just before 11:30pm this evening the Calgary Fire Department responded to the 1800 block of 16 street S.W to assist a person with difficulty breathing .When crews arrived they were encountered by several residents of a apartment building reporting the same problem. As a precautionary measure crews evacuated the structure and transfered patient care to arriving Alberta Health Services personnel. Fire department personnel began air quality testing and discovered that a pepper spray device had been discharged in the building. Large volume fans were used to ventilate the structure and crews remained on scene to monitor air quality.Twelve people were initialy evacuated and all have since been allowed to return to their residence. 16 street S.W. was temporarily closed and has since been reopened to vehicle traffic.
