Fire Crews Respond to Garage Fire in Willow Park

At approximately 0320 this morning the Calgary Fire Department responded to 911 calls for an explosion and garage fire on the 300 block of Whitney Crescent in the Southeast community of Willow Park. On arrival, crews encountered heavy smoke and a detached rear garage that was fully involved in fire. Neighbors reported hearing explosions and the sound of bullets going off in the garage. On scene crews were able to confirm that there were batteries, ammunition and propane cylinders in the detached garage.

Crews worked to contain the fire to the building of origin and were able to quickly bring the fire under control with master streams. Due to the close proximity of residences to the garage, fire crews entered buildings to monitor air quality and check for extension.

Crews evacuated adjacent homes as a precaution and to ensure that homes were safe to reoccupy. There was one vehicle damaged in the affected garage, and no injuries on scene. Calgary Police assisted with traffic control and AHS was on standby. ATCO and ENMAX were requested for assistance with utilities. The cause of the fire is under investigation and crews will remain at the scene for the next several hours.
