Fire Crews Respond to 2nd Alarm House Fire in Strathcona

Just before two this morning, Calgary Fire Crews responded to reports of a house fire on Strathbury Circle SW. A neighbour had spotted the flames and called 911. Crews called a second alarm while enroute to the address after seeing a large volume of flame in the vicinity. Arriving fire fighters were met by the 5 adult occupants of the home who assured crews that everyone was out of the building and accounted for. The 5 occupants were housed with a neighbour while fire fighters battled the blaze. Adjacent homes to the left and right of the involved structure were protected from radiant heat and embers by large volume water streams. Although the involved structure will not be habitable until extensive repairs are completed, the adjacent homes were damage free. One of the occupants noticed the smell of smoke and alerted the other four to exit the building, then tried calling 911 from inside the house. The phone was not functional and they immediately left the house. Another occupant tried using a garden hose to extinguish what had now become a significant blaze. The Calgary Fire Department would like to remind citizens, should they encounter signs of fire in a building to immediately exit the structure and call 911 from a safe location. Have an evacuation plan, talk with your family and make sure that everyone understands what to do and where to go in the event of an emergency. Install smoke detectors, test them regularly and leave the fire fight to the professionals.  Thankfully, there were no injuries at his incident. Cause of the fire is under investigation.
