Exemplary Service Medals Awarded to 76 Calgary Firefighters

Today, 76 Calgary firefighters were awarded for their outstanding fire service by the Provincial Fire Commissioner.  16 Calgary firefighters attended the 2013 Fire Services Exemplary Medal Awards ceremony at the Calgary Fire Department’s Multi-Agency Training Centre. The ceremony is held to recognize southern Alberta’s full time and volunteer firefighters for outstanding fire service. 

 

The Calgary Fire Department co-hosted the event with the Office of the Provincial Fire Commissioner. 

 

The Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, the Honourable Donald S. Ethell presented the awards. MLA Jason Luan and Calgary Fire Department Chief Bruce Burrell spoke at the ceremony.

 

“The Fire Services Exemplary medal recognizes the outstanding commitment of fire service personnel across Canada, “said Doug Griffiths, Minister of Municipal Affairs.  “Albertans are very fortunate that so many individuals have been recognized in Alberta. This truly reflects the dedication of these Albertans who have chosen to put themselves at risk to protect the safety of others.”

 

“Our firefighters are dedicated to delivering the highest level of emergency response service to Calgarians, and the Exemplary Service Medals are a testament to that,” said Fire Chief Bruce Burrell. “Their unwavering commitment to citizen safety is admirable.”

 

The awards were established in 1985 by Her Majesty The Queen. The medal is gold with red ribbon embossed with a Maltese Cross, crossed axes, and a fire hydrant against a maple leaf background. The medal is awarded for 20, 30 and 40 years of exemplary service and worn on special occasions by firefighters.
