Early Morning Garage Fire

At approximately 5:30 this morning, the Calgary Fire Department responded to a 911 call in the northeast community of Martindale for a garage on fire. When fire crews arrived at the 100 block of Martindale Drive they found a detached residential garage in the rear lane fully involved with fire that included a small adjacent trailer. Firefighters deployed multiple hose lines to keep the fire contained to the building of origin and prevent it from spreading to neighboring buildings.

The fire was quickly brought under control, and the lone occupant of the house was able to evacuate safely. Damage to the source garage was extensive as well as extensive damage to the trailer unit. There was heat damage to the siding of the adjacent garage and to the main house. One firefighter suffered a minor injury on scene and has been transported to hospital. Homes next door to the incident were temporarily evacuated as a precaution and all occupants are back in their homes.

Calgary Police assisted at the scene with perimeter control, and EMS provided medical support. The cause of the fire is under investigation and crews will be on scene throughout the day. Working smoke alarms save lives, make sure you have yours installed and that they are working and tested.
