Construction Fire at Calgary International Airport

The Calgary Fire Department received a call for a fire at a construction site located at the International Airport just before 11:00 am this morning. Crews arrived to find a fire burning in a storage area used for construction material and supplies. It was immediately noticed that diesel fuel tanks, propane tanks and acetylene cylinders were threatened by the fire. The area located east of the main terminal is a construction zone not accessible by the general public. A evacuation zone was set up around the incident as a precaution. Water tenders were called to the scene to shuttle water to the area to assist the firefighting operation as there were no hydrants in the immediate area. The fire was quickly brought under control but crews worked for several hours overhauling the area and making sure the fire was completely out and all fuel tanks were safe. Some of the tanks had noticeable damage and have been condemned. No injuries were reported and the cause is now under investigation. Commanders at the scene were in contact with Airport operations staff to insure smoke from the event would not hamper Air traffic or opperations.
