Calgary Firefighters Toy Association brings joy to thousands of children this Christmas
More than 3,000 children and youth from over 1500 families were treated to a holiday celebration hosted by the Calgary Firefighters Toy Association this afternoon.
“This is my sixth year organizing this event and I can honestly say it is one of the most rewarding experiences for me,” said Jamie Blayney, Calgary firefighter. “We get just as much joy out of it as the children themselves.”
Blayney was joined by over 200 Calgary firefighters and volunteers to bring the holiday spirit to thousands of children at their 46th annual Christmas Party held at the Stampede Corral. Participants were treated to entertainment, lunch and presents delivered by the ‘big guy’ himself – Santa Claus.
The children and their families attending today’s event were identified by the Calgary Board of Education, the Calgary Catholic School Board and the Salvation Army as families in need and deserving of a special holiday celebration.
For nearly 50 years, Calgary firefighters, Calgary Fire Department (CFD) staff, retired CFD members and other volunteers have donated money and time to provide a Christmas celebration for thousands of Calgary families in need. The Christmas Party has been held at the Stampede Corral through the generous support of the Calgary Exhibition & Stampede since 1967.
Special guests (aside from Santa) at this year’s event included members of the Calgary Stampeders, players Keon Raymond and Randy Chevrier, City Councillors Sean Chu, Andre Chabot and Shane Keating, CFD Pipes and Drums, CFD Honour Guard, the Cappy Smart Band as well as clowns and mascots.
