Calgary Firefighters Quench Locomotive Fire

At approximately 4 o'clock this morning the Calgary Fire Department responded the 11,000 block of Bearspaw Road NW for reports of a locomotive fire.  Upon arrival, fire crews encountered a large volume of smoke and a 2 meter flame venting from the engine compartment of a locomotive.  Fire crews quickly doused the flames, confining the fire to the engine compartment of the locomotive. Firefighters assessed the train crew for injuries.  No injuries were reported.  The locomotive involved was one of two, pulling a westbound train. It is currently undetermined how long the fire burned before it was recognized, but a large cloud of smoke was created, dramatically affecting visibility throughout the downtown core and river valley. Rail traffic was shut down in both directions for the safety of personnel. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation
