CALGARY FIREFIGHTERS BATTLE BASEMENT BLAZE

maltese cross
At approximately 11:00 last night Calgary Fire Department responded to 37 St and Spruce Dr SW for reports of a house fire.  Upon arrival fire crews found thick smoke venting from a rear window of the single family residence.  Fire crews mounted an exterior attack and knocked down the fire, directing fire streams through a basement window.  Firefighters removed the smoke with high pressure fans then entered to conduct a search for victims.  No victims were found.  A neighbour stated that the home was vacant at the time of the fire.   As a precaution, the houses on either side of the involved building were temporarily evacuated.  The evacuated residents have since been allowed back into their homes. 37 St and Spruce Drive SW was temporarily shut down to traffic but is now reopened.  At this time, no estimate of damage is available and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
