Calgary Fire Responds to Two Early Morning Fires

At approximately 2:30 this morning, the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) responded to a 911 call for a possible fire in a multi-family occupancy in the northeast community of Thorncliffe. On arrival, firefighters found smoke coming from windows and doors of a suite in an 8-plex in the 6100 block of Buckthorn Road. Occupants of the building had begun evacuating, and fire crews were able to gain entry and locate a fire in the kitchen area. The fire was quickly brought under control and extinguished and a search revealed that all occupants were out of the building and accounted for. The lone occupant was treated on scene by crews for minor smoke inhalation. All other suites were reoccupied with only minor smoke. The suite involved in the fire sustained moderate fire damage and smoke damage throughout. Crews remain on scene assisting investigators.

At 3:30 am a large fire in a commercial occupancy was discovered by Calgary Police while responding to an intruder alarm in the 5200 block of Marlborough Drive in the southeast community of Marlborough Park. When fire crews arrived they were met with large volumes of dark smoke and fire in both the front and rear of a multi-unit 2 story commercial building.

CFD quickly attacked the fire from the front and confined the fire to the single unit of origin. CPS assisted in evacuating adjacent homes as a precaution. Damage from the fire is extensive in the business of origin, and crews continue to extinguish hot spots. Investigators from Calgary Fire and CPS arson are on scene as the cause of the fire is suspicious. Attached businesses have extensive smoke damage and crews will be on scene throughout the day monitoring the scene and assisting investigation. There were no injuries reported on scene.

The Calgary Fire Department would like to ask citizens that have photos, video, or information regarding this fire, especially prior to CFD arrival on scene, to please email piofire@calgary.ca
