The Calgary Fire Department continues to be on-scene at the train derailment at Alyth Yard near 19 Avenue and 15 Street S.E. As of this afternoon, approximately 240,000L of product from two cars has been successfully removed from the vicinity.

Recovery activities will continue until the situation is resolved. This means that the Fire Department and Canadian Pacific will be working into the evening.

The plan for the remainder of recovery operations is to continue to remove product from the derailed cars into empty cars on an adjacent track. Once the product has been removed from the cars, they will be reset on the track and the product removed off site.

The product in the derailed cars is a flammable and volatile hydrocarbon used as a diluting agent in pipelines. It was being transported in pressurized rail cars.

Fifteenth Street between Blackfoot Trail and 9 Avenue S.E. will remain closed until further notice.
