Calgary Fire Department Technical Rescue Team deployed to secure broken window 16 stories up

On November 2, a window on the 16th floor of a downtown building located at 500 5 Avenue S.W. sustained damage from a construction incident. It is unknown at this time how this occurred. On the afternoon of Wednesday November 3, a call was made to 9-1-1 regarding concern for the safety of pedestrians walking in the area due to the possibility of falling glass. A piece of post tensioning cable could be seen sticking out of the window, protruding approximately a metre.

Calgary Police Services (CPS) officers responded to the scene to close the sidewalk and adjacent lanes while Calgary fire crews including the specially trained Technical Rescue Team (TRT) prepared to rappel down to secure the glass. A TRT member rappelled down the side of the building to remove any loose pieces and used special all weather flashing tape to temporarily secure the remainder of the window until permanent repairs are made.

The City of Calgary Safety Response Unit was also called to the scene to investigate the incident. No injuries have been reported and traffic was opened back up to the area at 16:20 this afternoon.
