Calgary Fire Department responds to south west garage fire

At approximately 1:20 this afternoon, Calgary fire crews were called to the 4400 block of 13th Avenue S.W. for reports of a garage fire. Thick black smoke and flames were visible even before CFD arrived on scene. On arrival, firefighters encountered a fully involved garage fire. Within minutes, the roof of the structure collapsed due to the extensive damage from the fire. The fire was fuelled by accelerants and propane tanks stored in the garage. Firefighters successfully prevented spread of the fire to surrounding homes and structures. Radiant heat from the fire did cause some damage to the siding of a neighbouring garage, a fence, and several windows of the home closest to the garage. A vehicle parked next to the garage was also significantly damaged. Eight homes were temporarily evacuated as a precaution and children at a neighbouring school were kept inside to prevent exposure to possible smoke in the area. No injuries were reported as a result of this fire and Calgary Fire Investigators are on scene to determine origin and cause.
