Calgary Fire Department responds to multi vehicle fire at southeast salvage yard

Shortly after 11:00 this morning, Calgary 9-1-1 received multiple calls regarding dark plumes of smoke coming from a vehicle processing facility at the 3500 block of 52 Street SE. When fire crews arrived on scene, they found several vehicles on fire with flames impinging on a trailer. One employee had safely evacuated the area. There were some reports of explosions which could be attributed to propane tanks and residual fuel in vehicle gas tanks.

The fire also spread to a power pole which brought live electrical lines down onto the fire scene creating additional risk for firefighters. ENMAX was called to the scene to shut down power to the affected line. This temporarily affected traffic lights in the surrounding area. 52 Street between Erin Woods Drive and Peigan Trail were closed in both directions so as not to impede firefighting efforts.

The fire was declared under control at approximately noon and no injuries were reported as a result of this incident. Calgary Fire Department fire investigators are at the scene to determine the origin and cause. If anybody has photos, video or information of this fire especially prior to CFD arrival on scene, please email piofire@calgary.ca
