Calgary Fire Department responds to high rise kitchen fire in N.W.

Shortly after 10 this morning, a resident living on the 17th floor at the 4900 Block of Dalton Drive N.W. called 911 because of a smell of smoke in the building. Upon arrival, fire crews observed smoke coming from a suite on the 16th floor and immediately pulled the fire alarm to start evacuation of the building.  Upon investigation, firefighters found the fire in the kitchen of a unit on the 16th floor. Fire crews quickly contained the fire limiting damage to the kitchen area. The rest of the unit suffered smoke damage. No occupants were in the unit at the time of the fire however, a cat was rescued. Approximately 70 people were evacuated from the building and no injuries were reported. Evacuees will be allowed back in shortly. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
