Calgary Fire Department responds to grocery store fire on Centre Street North

Close to noon today, the Calgary Fire Department responded to a building fire in a grocery store at the 1600 block of Centre Street North. Initial reports to 911 were of alarm bells ringing however the caller then also reported the smell of smoke in the building. The business where the fire originated was equipped with a sprinkler system which activated as it is intended to do.  The sprinkler head closest to the fire was activated by the heat, successfully containing and extinguishing the fire prior to CFD arrival. Over 50 patrons and employees were evacuated from the building and there were no reports of injuries. Firefighters ensured the fire was extinguished and stopped the flow of water from the sprinkler head. A Calgary Fire Department Fire Investigator is on scene to determine origin and cause.
