Calgary Fire Department responds to garage fire on Fairmont Dr SE

At approximately 6:30 this evening, the Calgary Fire Department was dispatched to 9800 block of Fairmont DR SE for reports of a garage fire. Engine 14 was already in the neighbourhood participating in the Home Safety Program and thus was very quick to arrive on scene. This is a program performed by the CFD around the city to promote home safety and the use of smoke alarms. The first arriving crews set up a number of large volume hoses to contain the fire to the detached garage and to help minimize the damage to the house and adjacent homes. A second alarm was called due to the large volume of smoke and flames. There was extensive damage to the garage and a truck parked in the alley as well as one adjacent home which sustained some heat damage. As a precaution, two homes downwind were evacuated. The residents will be allowed back home once the air quality is confirmed. There were no injuries and at this time, crews remain on scene checking for hot spots. Fire Investigators are on scene to determine the origin and cause.
