Calgary Fire Department Responds to Fire in South East 4-Plex

At approximately 8:15 this evening, the Calgary Fire Department responded to reports of a possible explosion and fire at a 4-plex in the 2200 block of 48 St. SE.  Upon arrival fire crews were met with smoke coming from the front of the structure. A second alarm was called to support the initial fire attack because of the amount of smoke and occupancy. Firefighters initiated an aggressive interior attack and search of all suites. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the unit of origin.  The occupant of the fire suite escaped through a window and was treated by Alberta Health Services.  7 other residents from the adjoining 3 units self-evacuated prior to firefighters arriving on scene.  Smoke in all suites caused all occupants to be displaced for the evening.  Red Cross will house one family of 4.  Fire crews remain on scene to check for hot spots and fire extension.  The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Calgary Fire Department would like to remind citizens that pre-planning fire escape routes and having a pre-arranged meeting point may help save lives.
