Calgary Fire Department responds to falling debris
At approximately 11:30 a.m., Calgary Fire Crews responded to reports of bricks falling from a six story, commercial building at the 600 block of 7 Street SW.
On arrival, Firefighters immediately evacuated the building and set up a safety perimeter. Two adjacent buildings were also partially evacuated. Fire crews investigated, however saw no evidence of damage from the building’s interior. There is visible evidence of bricks that have fallen from the outside of the building and the east wall of the building shows some bulging.
The Plus 15 on 7 St. between 6 and 7 Avenues SW has also been closed as a precautionary measure.
The City’s Development and Building Approvals, Safety Response Unit and Professional Engineer are on scene to investigate the cause of the damage.
In total over a dozen business and approximately 150 people were evacuated.
No injuries were reported, and the Safety Response Unit will determine if and when the building is safe for re-entry.
The Calgary Police Service is on site, providing traffic control. Crews from ATCO Gas and Enmax are also on scene.
