Calgary Fire Department responds to early morning fire in Quarry Park

Just before 5:30 this morning, the Calgary Fire Department was called to a waste management facility in the south east community of Quarry Park. On arrival, fire crews reported heavy smoke in the structure however the building's sprinkler system had activated holding the fire's advance. Four employees had self evacuated prior to the arrival of CFD and two were assessed by AHS. Firefighters extinguished the fire and used mechanical ventilation to clear the smoke. A large pile of waste materials consisting of wood, papers and plastics was the source of the fire and fire crews utilized a Bobcat to move the debris around in order to extinguish the fire. Calgary Fire Department Fire Investigators are on scene to find the cause of the fire, and fire crews continue to monitor for hot spots. No other injuries were reported as a result of this fire and damage to the facility is minor.
