Calgary Fire Department responds to early morning apartment fire

The occupants of a downtown apartment won’t soon forget last night’s birthday party. At approximately 0530 this morning fire crews responded to a building fire on Cameron Ave SW. Upon arrival, whilst doing their initial size up, crews discovered a fully involved propane BBQ on a second story balcony. The crews quickly accessed the balcony via a ground ladder and extinguished the fire.  As a precaution the occupants of the building were evacuated, but have now been allowed to return to their homes. The sole occupant of the apartment upon discovering the fire evacuated the apartment and activated the alarm system. The fire was contained to the balcony and no interior damage to the building occurred. The Fire Department would like to remind people that if they discover a fire or other life threatening hazards the following steps should be taken. Evacuate the building to a pre-established muster point, activate the alarm system, call 911 and do not re-enter the building. There were no injuries and fire crews have returned from this call.
