Calgary Fire Department responds to apartment fire in southwest

 

Just before 1:20 this afternoon, Calgary fire crews were called to the 800 block of Royal Avenue S.W. for reports of a fire. Upon arrival, firefighters found a piece of furniture on fire in an apartment unit. Fire crews kept the fire contained and successfully extinguished it with a minimal amount of water. Damage was contained to only one unit although there was some smoke in the hallway as a result. The occupant of the unit was rescued by the landlord who was following up on an odour complaint. The occupant's care was transferred to EMS. Approximately 15 people were evacuated from the building and are expected to be let back in shortly. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
