Calgary Fire Department responds to 2 alarm house fire in the SW.

Calgary Fire Department responds to 2 alarm house fire in the SW.

At approximately 12:30 AM this morning, Calgary 9-1-1 received several calls reporting a house fire in the 700 block of 8 Avenue SW.

The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) was dispatched, and called a second alarm prior to arriving based on the amount of smoke and fire visible. On arrival crews determined a detached garage and home were involved with strong wind pushing the fire toward the next door exposed garage and home. Firefighting efforts were immediately focused on stopping the spread of fire to further homes, deploying aerial water streams and protecting exposures. Fire crews simultaneously evacuated surrounding homes that were in the immediate danger areas.

3 residents were in the home at the time of the fire. A mother and son upstairs and an adult male renter downstairs safely evacuated prior to CFD arrival. A male resident in the exposed home received minor burns while evacuating, he was treated on scene by Alberta Health Services (AHS) and released. No other injuries have been reported at this time.

1 home and garage and the next door exposed garage and several vehicles have been severely damaged by fire with the exposed home slightly damaged by heat and smoke. Salvage and overhaul efforts are currently underway to reduce further damage and property loss.

Calgary Police Services (CPS) are on scene to assist with traffic control and scene safety. ATCO and ENMAX are also on scene to control and manage the flow of utilities.

Calgary Fire Department Investigator is on scene working to determine the origin and cause of the fire. Fire crews will remain on scene through the night.
