Calgary Fire Department Proudly Opens New Symons Valley Fire Station No. 40

The Calgary Fire Department along with dignitaries and members of the community officially opened the new Symons Valley Fire Station in the city’s NW today.

 

Located at 12920 Symons Valley Road N.W., the fire hall serves the quickly growing residential areas of Evanston, Kincora, Sherwood, Sage Hill and Nolan Hill.

 

“I am thrilled that the residents of these growing communities will continue to have exceptional fire protection,” said Mayor Naheed Nenshi. “A permanent fire station is essential in meeting the needs of vibrant, active and safe communities.”

 

A rapidly expanding residential district, the Civic Census reports that the area population has grown almost 50 per cent in the last two years. A temporary station No. 40 based in Sage Hill served the district from July, 2010.

 

“The opening of the Symons Valley Fire Station is a significant factor in continuing to ensure safe communities in our city,”said Fire Chief Bruce Burrell. “The Calgary Fire Department is committed to managing growth and providing services not only in established neighbourhoods, but also in the newer areas that are expanding quickly. With the North West quadrant developing at a swift pace, it’s essential to provide reliable emergency fire services for the long term.”

 

The two-storey Symons Valley Fire Station has three bays and the space to accommodate modern firefighting apparatus. As part of the CFD’s mandate to elevate its environmental stewardship, the building meets Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Gold standards, an internationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings. Some features contributing to its LEED Gold rating include solar photovoltaic panels to supply some electrical needs, solar water heating panels, storm water management and use of permeable surfaces, a reflective roofing system and others.

 

The $16.1 million budget for this project came from the Government of Alberta’s Municipal Sustainability Initiative ($6.9 million), the Community and Recreation Levy ($8.9 million), and $300,000 from tax supported capital funding.
