Calgary Fire Department has SE three alarm fire under control

This morning before 11 a.m. the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) responded to a 9-1-1 call reporting a building fire at the 1600 block of 42nd Avenue SE. When fire crews arrived they found heavy, dark smoke with flames coming from the building which is used to manufacture shingles and roofing material. On arrival, the CFD upgraded the incident to a three alarm fire. 

CFD Hazardous Materials team conducted air monitoring in the area and found no air quality issues. There were no reported injuries as a result of the incident. 

Calgary fire crews used aerial platforms to fight the fire from several elevated angles. By 2 p.m. the fire was under control. Some parts of the building have collapsed due to the fire and CFD remains at the scene to put out hot spots. They expect to stay on site through the night. 

More than 60 employees from the affected building were evacuated in addition to surrounding businesses. Most employees have been able to return to their evacuated workplaces. 

15 A Street and part of 42nd Avenue SE continue to be closed. Ogden Road has reopened.
