Calgary Fire Department fights large blaze downtown

Shortly before noon today, the Calgary Fire Department was called to a fire in a downtown four story building under construction. 911 received multiple calls due to the amount of fire and smoke visible. First arriving fire crews were told there was nobody in the building therefore determined that the most appropriate firefighting tactic was to protect the exposures and fight the fire defensively. A second alarm was quickly called and additional firefighting resources were brought to the scene as needed. Fire crews used aerials, elevated platforms and master streams to fight and contain the fire. A residential building near the fire was evacuated as a precaution. No injuries have been reported as a result of this fire and Calgary Fire Department Fire Investigators are on scene to determine the origin and cause. Traffic in the area has been affected in a several block radius and commuters are urged to avoid the area.
