Calgary Fire Department fights duplex fire on Whitlock Place North East

At approximately 3:45 this afternoon, 9-1-1 received calls reporting smoke and flames coming from a house on Whitlock Place in north east community of Whitehorn. When fire crews arrived, they encountered one half of a duplex which was fully involved with fire.

Firefighters quickly knocked the fire down from the outside. Structural issues due to fire damage made it too dangerous to send crews inside. Five homes were evacuated as a precaution resulting in several dozen residents being temporarily displaced.

Two residents in the source home were inside at the time of the fire and were alerted to the danger by a working smoke alarm. They did breath in some smoke on their way out and thus were assessed by EMS. They were not transported.

Three cats were in the home as well but only one was found. It was located in a nearby tree by firefighters operating the aerial. The other two cats are currently unaccounted for.

Damage to the source residence is severe and the attached duplex sustained moderate fire and smoke damage.

The origin and cause of the fire is under investigation. If any citizens have photos, video or information regarding this fire , especially prior to CFD arrival on scene, please email piofire@calgary.ca
