Calgary Fire Department extinguishes two separate second alarm building fires

At approximately 0100 this morning the Calgary Fire Department responded to a commercial garage on 12 Ave SW. Upon arrival crews were faced with a large volume of smoke and flames coming from the bay doors of the business. The flames were also encroaching on an adjacent three story apartment building. A second alarm was called because of the life hazard and large amount of fire. The crews originally focused on life safety and ensured that the three story building was evacuated as well as protected by large volumes of water. Once the adjacent exposures were protected and the fire contained to the building of origin, the crews began an aggressive attack at the seat of the fire. While this event was unfolding, a second building fire in the Foothills Industrial park was discovered.  Because of the size of the building and potential fire load a second alarm was also called for this fire. In spite of the warehouse being heavily charged with black smoke, the crews were able to locate the fire utilizing thermal imaging cameras. The fire was quickly brought under control. At the present time crews remain on scene at both sites dealing with hot spots. The investigation into the cause of both fires will commence once the areas are deemed safe. There were no injuries and at the present time, 12 Ave SW between 14 and 10 Street remains closed.
