Calgary Fire Department evacuates several homes due to a natural gas leak

At approximately 1:00 AM this morning, the Calgary Fire Department responded to Douglas bank Bay SE to investigate reports of a strong smell of natural gas in the area. Luckily the winds were very mild and the Hazardous Material team was able to quickly locate the leak utilizing hand held air monitoring equipment. The leak was found to be coming from a broken gas line running under the main road. As a precaution, two houses were evacuated and the four home owners are currently being housed on a City Of Calgary Transit bus. ATCO is on scene and has started the repairs to the broken gas line. Once these repairs are completed the evacuees will be allowed back into their homes. There were no injuries and one Fire truck is still on scene as a precaution, there is no risk to the adjacent houses.
