Calgary Fire Department Evacuates 108 Children From N.E. Daycare Due To Flood In Basement

This afternoon at 3:20 fire crews were called to a daycare at the 100 block of Covepark Square N.E. Firefighters found water pouring into the basement, out of a conduit pipe which was coming from the back alley. Firefighters evacuated approximately 100 children ranging in ages from 12 months to 12 years old and numerous daycare staff. There were no reports of injuries. Once the building was deemed safe, the children were relocated to the main floor. Upon investigation, firefghters determined that snow and ice were blocking a storm sewer which was causing the water to back up and flood the alley. Firefighters diverted water and chipped away at the ice to open the sewer and allow water to drain appropriately.
