Calgary Fire Department Encourages Safe Use of Candles

From Christmas advent wreaths to Hanukkah menorahs, candles help celebrate the holidays as a symbol of light and warmth. The open flame of a candle, however, can be a fire hazard. The Calgary Fire Department reminds Calgarians to be cautious when using candles.

“Candles can really add to the ambiance of the holiday season,” said Carol Henke, Public Information Officer, Calgary Fire Department. “Nevertheless, we see several fires every year started by unattended candles that endanger lives and ruin holidays.”

The Calgary Fire Department has several tips on the safe use of candles:

Place candles in sturdy holders on flat, stable surfaces so they do not tip over or spill wax.
Place candles away from combustible materials such as curtains, paper or decorations.
Light candles carefully, keeping hair and loose clothing away from the flame.
Keep candles out of reach of children and away from pets, and do not leave children or pets alone with a burning candle.
Always keep matches and lighters out of reach of children, and in a secure place.
Never let candles burn all the way down. Blow out the candle before it gets too close to the container, holder or the end of the wick.
Do not leave burning candles unattended; always blow candles out when you leave the room or go to bed.
Have flashlights ready to use, instead of candles, during a power outage.
Never use a candle if oxygen is being used in the home.
Consider using flameless candles, which are battery operated with LED lights.
