Calgary Fire Department celebrates new firefighter grads

After completing their intensive training, 36 recruits graduated today to the rank of probationary firefighter with the Calgary Fire Department (CFD).

“I want to thank you for your commitment to serving the people of this great city,” said Mayor Naheed Nenshi in his address to today’s class. “Thank you for joining this family of almost 1,400 firefighters and making the pledge to protect Calgarians, to live up to high expectations and to create a legacy as the newest generation of first responders.”

Calgary’s Mayor joined Fire Chief Bruce Burrell for the special event, recognizing the completion of training by CFD recruits to become City of Calgary firefighters. Training includes vehicle extrication, live fire exercises, emergency medical responder training, public education and awareness for community fire prevention and safety. Firefighter recruits also successfully completed a firefighter practicum.

“Your training prepares you to perform in an environment of stress, hardship and change,” said Fire Chief Bruce Burrell. “The training you received, matched with your passion for the profession, will change the lives of people you encounter as Calgary firefighters.”

After graduation, the recruits will be assigned to one of Calgary’s fire stations where they will complete eight months as probationary firefighters and be mentored by CFD members as they put their training into action.
