Calgary Fire Department battles two alarm condo fire

At 5:15 this morning, 911 received multiple calls for a building fire at the 2200 block of 1st Street SW. Fire crews could see thick black smoke en route and therefore immediately called for a second alarm. Early reports indicate the fire may have started on a balcony on the east side of the building. Firefighters quickly attacked the fire from the exterior and prevented spread to other parts of the complex. One person received minor burns however no other injuries were reported. Four suites were destroyed and some other suites in the building sustained smoke and water damage. The fire is now out however fire crews will remain on scene to assess for any hot spots. Firefighters are currently entering suites to retrieve residents' pets and other valuables. CEMA is also at the site to assist with residents' needs. Calgary Fire Investigators are also present and working to determine the origin and cause.
