Calgary Fire Crews Respond to Structure Fires in Skyview

At approximately 11:45 this morning, the Calgary Fire Department responded to reports of a structure fire in the 200 block of Skyview Springs Garden NE. Upon arrival, firefighters were challenged by 2 fully involved detached garages that were generating significant heat to the surrounding buildings. The flames were quickly brought under control but not before the radiant heat had caused varying degrees of external damage to 5 homes and 2 additional garages immediately in front of and beside the source structures. The 2 original garages were completed destroyed along with the 3 vehicles inside those garages. Also, across the back alley there were 2 more homes, 1 garage and a shed that suffered minor exterior damage to the siding. First arriving Calgary Police Service members initiated an evacuation of the 5 immediately threatened homes, affecting 12 occupants and 2 pets. Those displaced were allowed to re-enter a short time later. There were no injuries reported at the incident. Fire crews remain on scene to extinguish hot spots and look for possible fire extension. The fire investigator is also on scene, but the cause of the original fire has not determined.
